OpenVPN Connect, the “official” OpenVPN http://openvpnandroid.com/board-software-and-its-possibilities/ Inc. app, is designed to be more user-friendly for VPN users who have little technical knowledge. This means that it is less feature-rich than the openvpn android app that is targeted at more advanced OpenVPN users.
Openvpn for Android is a free and open source client developed by Arne Schwabe that allows you to connect to any VPN service that supports the OpenVPN protocol. If your device isn’t compatible the pre-configured VPN applications available on the Google Play Store, this is an excellent alternative. The setup process is quite simple. You will need to import the VPN profile files. (The config files are named.ovpn). These files can be downloaded from your VPN provider’s site or by contacting live chat support.
Once you’ve imported your profile, simply tap on the server you want to connect to for that server to connect to it. Once connected, your Internet traffic is routed through a secure tunnel to the server selected in the app. The Status tab lets you examine your connection’s information and status. The kill switch is activated by default. It will block your internet connection when the VPN tunnel is cut off.
The application also offers per-app VPN as well as an all-day-long feature that automatically initiates an VPN connection when the app is being used and continues to run even after your device is shut down or switches networks. However, this requires Android 7.0 or higher and could make your battery run more than usual.
